What We Do
Our nutrition education and obesity prevention workshops are between 20 minutes and 1.5 hours long. You can participate in one class, or in a series of workshops. We actively engage participants in hands-on, interactive lessons and activities about a range of topics including:
- Eating more fruits and vegetables
- Drinking fewer sugar-sweetened beverages
- Identifying and choosing whole grains
- Choosing low-fat dairy
- Eating better on a budget
- Meal planning
- Basic cooking skills
- Being physically active and balancing calories as part of a healthy lifestyle
Many of our workshops include food demonstrations. Participants can actively engage in the preparation of healthful, low-cost recipes, and try samples. Everyone who attends a food demonstration gets a copy of the recipe so they can try it at home!
Our nutrition educators attend community events such as National Night Out, county fairs, farmers markets, and health fairs where they provide educational materials and information to attendees. We also host community events at libraries, community centers, and other locations open to the public.
Grocery Store Tours
During our Cooking Matters at the Store grocery store tours, participants learn about reading food labels, comparing unit prices, finding whole grain foods, and identifying three ways to purchase produce. Our store tours empower participants to shop smart so they can prepare healthful meals at home.
